Ruth's Next Trip to Europe – Guide for Families

Ruth on the Glacier Express for the first time in 1998.

Ruth on the Glacier Express for the first time in 1998.

Ruth and I spent the entire summer of 1970 exploring Europe. Since that time she has been back a number of times, often accompanying me on business trips there. I would plan my week of training at a customer site in England, Switzerland, or Austria, and Ruth planned our “tourism” for the evenings and weekends of the trip. Next month she will be going back to Europe and taking five young women for the whirlwind tour of their lives.

Ruth has organized sightseeing for others in the past, but this next plan is just for her four Canadian nieces and our youngest daughter Kate.  Yep, they are soon to be hustled about Europe on a 15 day trip than jams in more adventure than most people would countenance.

The plane tickets to Zurich were purchased in May at the best price we have seen and we have been tracking the prices for two years.  In the last few days, a list of train reservations were made, including berths on two night trains (why waste time in a hotel when you can be moving to your next stop?).

The trip itinerary by necessity had to exclude many choice spots.  The pain of scratching the UK, the Netherlands, Florence, and so much more!  Well, there’s a limit to what you can see in 15 days on one CONTINENT representing 2000 years and more of the history of western civilization!  But it includes at least some of the top picks from each of the intrepid travelers and their guide. Did I mention that none of the five young women (ages 32 to 46) have ever been to Europe?

For now, here is a quick list of locations on this “overview of Europe” tour:  Luzern, Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, Neuschwanstein, Salzburg, the Rhine River, Paris/Versailles, Cinque Terre coast, Venice, Swiss Alps via Glacier Express, Lauterbrunnen, Zurich.

Are you dizzy yet?

So for two weeks in late September, Ruth will be “on tour” – sounds good, eh?
